Tunnel People: The Hidden Homeless

Tunnel People: The Hidden Homeless

Speaker: Tuen Voeten
Acclaimed War Photographer and Cultural Anthropologist

Date: Friday, Sept. 10, 2010

At the end of the millennium, thousands of homeless people roamed the streets of Manhattan. A small group of them went underground. Invisible to society, they managed to start a new life in the tunnel systems of the city.

Author Teun Voeten gained unprecedented access to this netherworld. For ve months in 1994 and 1995 he lived, slept and worked in the tunnel. With him, we meet Vietnam veterans, macrobiotic hippies, crack addicts, Cuban refugees, convicted killers, computer programmers, philosophical recluses and criminal runaways. Voeten describes their daily work, problems and pleasures with humor and compassion. He also witnessed the end of tunnel life. The tunnel people were evicted in 1996, but Amtrak and homeless organizations offered them alternative housing. Some succeeded in starting again above ground, while others failed. In this updated version of the book, "Tunnel People," Voeten tracks down the original tunnel dwellers and describes what has happened in the 13 years since they left the tunnels.

SAVED BY THE SUN - The State of the Union for Solar Energy

Saved by the Sun

In the face of catastrophic global climate change, pressure is building to scale up renewable, carbon-free energy—and to do it fast. Finding a cost-effective way to harness the infinite power of the sun has long been a dream, but now it’s become reality. Solar power is scaling up to the gigawatt level as prices are plunging. And breakthroughs in new materials and ingenious designs for solar collectors are transforming the technology into one of the hottest business opportunities of the decade. This green webinar features Evan I. Schwartz, writer/producer of SAVED BY THE SUN, a documentary that aired on PBS as part of its award-winning NOVA science series. The film’s director, Steven Latham, moderates this multimedia presentation.
